The Danger of a Naive Working Class
In the novel "Animal Farm" the animals were very naive. The pigs often took advantage of this and benefited from it. For example, the changing of the commandments. When the fourth commandment was changed to "No animal shall sleep on a bed" to "No animal shall sleep on a bed WITH SHEETS" Clover questioned the last two words being a part of the commandment but she didn't question it (pg.26). Another example is when Squealer was telling the animals Snowball was leading Pinchfield to an attack on Animal Farm and he was Jones spy from the start Boxer stood and said he didn't believe it to be true. He stated "I do not believe that Snowball was a traitor at the beginning. What he has don since is different. But I believe that at the Battle of Cowshed he was a good comrade". However Squealer told him that Comrade Napoleon said he was a traitor and he immediately changed his mind to say "If Napoleon said it, it must be right" (pg.31). The animals were easily manipulated because of their lack of education and by the fact that the pigs were the smartest animals. They were also fearful because of the murder of the animals that confessed (pg.32)Because of their fear and naivete they suffered under Napoleon. Maybe if they did speak up and came together against them they could have got out of poverty.
