Setting
Animal Farm was set on a imaginary farm in England. A time isn't really specified in the story. However the story reflects the Russian Revolution so its a safe assumption that it was in that same time period 1917. The beginning of the story took place during the life of Vladimir but the representation of his death by Old Major says most of the story took place afterwards in 1924 until the end of the revolution. England weather is somewhat like that of Michigan's. They have really hot summers and cold winters. They also have very unpredictable weather.
The time period could have had a impact on the animals because they had to work harder due to lack of good technology. They had to labor hard and longer in order to have sufficient results. This posed a lot of strain on them. The weather conditions also had a major impacts. During rainy seasons they had to push through mud and wet ground. In cold weather they had to work through snow and sleet. Through blizzards and storms they had a hard time seeing. They also could have got frostbite and other sicknesses. The summer can also bring problems with hard labor. Many animals probably had heat strokes or fainted.
Another part of the setting is the situation. With the revolution the animals felt obligated to work harder to improve animal farm. For example, Boxer came up with his own personal motto "I will work harder" (pg. 11). Under the leadership of Napoleon the animals were forced to work hard. They were also deprived of food and lived on rations often because the pigs had to be fed as they manipulated the animals to believe (pg.14).
